About Budo
Budo is composed of two pictograms. "Bu" equates to warrior, while "Do" is equavalent to way. These are simple descriptions of a very complex language. So, what does Budo mean? Does it merely mean "Warrior way" or just a way of fighting? Or is it a more complex system designed, not to create demonic dealers of death, but to expand the being into a higher, subtle realm? Budo is in and of itself an art. The actions of every motion are a reflection to the natural and spiritaul world. The student of Budo smiles through the darkness not because of bravery, but because the student knows the secret of self awareness. Like all paths, the evolution of the student of Budo is toward the many petalled lotus of enlightenment.
Budo teaches its students actions that could be used to do great damage to the world. It is with that resposnibility that the student learns humility, respect, and honor for the fragile balance of our delicate world. We learn such things not in the vain hope that someday we use them, but that they may never be called to action in the face of protecting the value of this world.
What is the Bujinkan
Our current Soke, Maasaki Hatsumi, the 34th Grand Master of Togakyure Ryu, also holds the sacred scrolls for many other Ryu (schools).
When Tatakamatsu Toshisigu handed down his knowledge to Hatsumi Sensei, Soke folded nine of these Ryu into one, creating the
Bujinkan.
The nine schools are: Shinden Fudo Ryu, Takagi Yoshin Ryu, Kumogakure Ryu, Kukishinden Ryu, Gyokushin Ryu, Togakure Ryu, Gyokko Ryu, Gikan Ryu, and Koto Ryu. These nine schools make up a complete Budo. Of these schools included in the Bujinkan three are ninjutsu schools. These three schools deal in a very old style of fighting that has survived the ages to been handed down. Daisuke Nishina Togakure founded his school 34 generations ago and it survives today because of its deep understanding of the true spirit of Budo.
The Bujinkan includes eighteen skills (Ninpo Bugei Ju Happen) which include: Taijutsu (body art), Kusari Fundo, sword, bojutsu (staff), shurikenjutsu (throwing weapons), Naginatajutsu, Shinobi iri (stealth), Bo Ryaku (strategy), and Seishin Teki Kyoyo (Enlightenment)
